Brain-Based Learning
CBC’s  kindergarten program covers the State of
Virginia Kindergarten Standards of Learning and
so much more…

Our Kindergarteners:
Receive individual and small group attention
from  experienced teachers.  Our class size is
small, with an average class size of 12.

Are immersed in high interest monthly themes
such as Water, Nocturnal Animals, Vehicles,
Plants, Oviparous Animals, and Birds.  These
themes serve as the “umbrella” for which the
standards fall under.  For example, our students
are growing plants, writing their observations,
counting and adding seeds, reading books about
plants, learning phonics through plant related
words, comparing and contrasting 2 versions of
“Jack and the Beanstalk.” patterning with flowers,
measuring plants – just to name a few—all in the
Plants unit.  Reading, writing and math skills are
seamlessly incorporated into every area of the
curriculum.

Are active learners.  They are given the
opportunity to independently explore Learning
Centers everyday.  These Centers are designed to
help children become more self-reliant and
responsible classroom citizens.

Learn though special events and projects.
Sorting, counting and tallying are used as our
Kindergarteners research the most common
vehicle that comes through our carpool line.
Higher level thinking skills are put into action as
they read about various vehicles, formulate
research questions, and then get outside and
crawl in an SUV, racecar and passenger van to
find the answers.  Just how many seatbelts does a
race car have?!

Learn through sharing with others.  Reading
skills are perfected as our Kindergarteners
practice reading to an audience as they share the
“Class Book” they wrote in the style of Dr. Seuss.
“My son's Kindergarten experiences not only readied him for
first grade academically, but also helped him build confidence in
his abilities, work independently and conscientiously, and
develop leadership skills by helping others. The best part was
that he had fun and was always "drawn in" by the month's focus
theme.”         Mary Lou R.
Our Kindergarten students are not ordinary students. . .
They are Kindergarten Scientists!
Kindergarten
Curriculum
“We are so pleased with the
    Kindergarten Program at CBC!
  The curriculum is creative and
inventive, and the kids have fun
while they learn in a safe, Christian
environment. It offers so much more
than merely teaching rote skills and
completing worksheets; but rather the
children are immersed in activities that
teach them to think critically in reading,
language arts, math, and science. The
kids learn to work independently but
also get lots of one-on-one attention.
Our daughter was reading by
Christmas which really boosted her
   confidence! We highly
      recommend this program! “

Learn through meaningful Field Trips. A trip to the farm is not just to
choose a pumpkin – we connect it with the farm and animals in the series
of books – “Mrs. Wishy Washy”.  A trip to the zoo includes an up close
and personal program with an owl as part of our Nocturnal Animal
Unit.

Learn in a Christian atmosphere – where God and his unending love are
incorporated into everything we do.  Weekly Bible stories come to life as
we tie them in with our themes.  Noah’s ark and rainbow are created in
the classroom during our Vehicle theme.  During our Water theme, the
story of Jesus calming the storm and seas is reenacted in the classroom
with “lightening”, ‘thunder” and even sprays of water.  Bible verses are
also used as reading tools in pocket charts and little readers.

The Chesapeake Public Schools do an amazing job teaching our children;
preparing them for the next step up in their academic careers.  So why
should you consider CBC Kindergarten as an alternative educational
program?  The answer is as individual as your children.  Is your child an
auditory or visual learner or does he/she learn best through a hands-
on/total involvement approach?  We believe that children are naturally
kinesthetic learners.  We want them to have the opportunity to become
totally involved in their learning through a total immersion approach.
But, we also want them to learn to be self-reliant, self-disciplined,
responsible classroom citizens.

We want your child to enter the
first grade as a confident,
self-assured, independent and
eager to learn student.

Our class is small, with fewer
students than the public schools
and with a lower student/teacher
ratio.

Special Project:  Unbreakable Humpty Dumpty

Students, with a little help from parents, created a
variety of HD characters and then tested their models
in the classroom “lab.”  In true scientists form, the
children hypothesized and predicted whether or not
the proposed model would crack it’s shell.  The
results were documented.  The HD’s did not break!
Add the title of “engineer” to your resume!
“Last year was an amazing
year for my son. He went
from dreading work to
wanting to become a learner.
The teachers and staff
worked individually with him
as he transitioned. He is
ready for first grade because
of his kindergarten
    experience.”
